5 Minutes With… Abigail Lazarus

While she wasn’t sure if a career in public relations was for her at first, our Communications Coordinator Abigail Lazarus now says PR is her dream industry and thrives off helping to tell her clients’ success stories. Read on to get to know why she loves working at Accela, her best career advice and her upcoming travel plans now that borders are open.

Tell us a bit about your role.

My role allows me to be the ‘in-between’, to help our clients get their communications across effectively, be their support where they need it, and celebrate their successes.

Did you always know you wanted to be a communications professional?

It’s pretty puzzling at first, when I first took Mass Communications and learnt of PR, I wasn’t sold. After working in Marketing for a couple of years, I gained a new appreciation for PR and ever since it's been a dream to work in this industry.

What’s the most inspiring part of your job?

The most inspiring thing is watching our clients’ successes unfold. The process of getting there isn’t always easy, but being able to partake in their goals is super rewarding.

What do you like about working at Accela?

What’s there not to love about Accela! Besides the awesome clients and people we get to work with, the company culture cultivated is great. We share, not just the work together, but our struggles, our accomplishments, and everything in between. There’s a level of care, camaraderie and respect that is authentic across all levels, and it’s quite rare to find.

What is the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Oof, this is a toughie, considering I have been in an eccentric job or two throughout my working experience. I think the most interesting job I’ve taken so far is working as a scare performer in Universal Studios Singapore Halloween Horror Nights, I loved the thrill of it so much I worked for it again in 2014 as well.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Someone I met briefly once told me that your career is what you wish to make of life in that very moment. Life is ever evolving and as people, we evolve year on year as well. The advice really stuck with me because there’s this notion of being on just one career path, and while that works for some, the experience and experimentation of learning what works best for you and your skills at any given time, is a wealth like no other.

What is your soundtrack of choice?

I’m really open to enjoying any genre of music, which is why my Spotify has multiple playlists for a variety of moods. My soundtrack of choice at the moment is Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush. Thanks Stranger Things Season 4 for embedding the song in my brain, it's been on the repeat list since!

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

I can’t live without my airpods. I’m constantly listening to music whenever I can, so it’s the one handy dandy tool to just pop in when I need to concentrate or relax.

Where are you looking forward to traveling now that the borders are back open?

I’m looking forward to traveling Europe, it was my original plan for 2020, before the pandemic made itself known. Particular spots I would want to visit are the Nordic countries (Norway, Iceland, Sweden) and Italy’s Amalfi Coast for the coastal views and beaches.

It’s happy hour, what’s in your glass?

A refreshing glass of G&T with a slice of cucumber.
